Interview with Todd Smrz, employee at Pondering Gardens Landscaping right here in River Falls, WI.

How long have you been working at Pondering Gardens?

Since April of 2016. Previously I served 3 tours in the Middle East as part of the Light Infantry since 1990.

What is your specialty within the team?

Other than Chadd, I am the driver of the vehicles and I get to do a little bit of everything.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I really enjoy getting to see the completed work. It starts out as a mess and by the time we’re done, we have a beautiful, well put together landscaped yard that I got to help create. One of my favorite things to do is drive around and see the finished product: rocks, trees, bushes, flowers and everything in between.

Another aspect that I thoroughly enjoy is being able to learn new things everyday. Most people probably don’t realize the complex and technical nature of being a landscaper. I get to learn about new products, techniques and styles of landscaping every day and I love it!

What is the most challenging part of the job?

It is a very physical job but I am a fitness geek so I view the physical nature of the job as an exciting challenge.

What are your favorite kinds of projects?
Retaining walls are great projects to work on because there’s a lot that goes into building the wall correctly and I get to use some of the technical skills I’ve gained to make the wall functionally sound and also aesthetically pleasing.

Another favorite is when we get to do water features. There’s always a new way to do these types of projects so we get to be creative and innovative with those projects.
