The Best Low Maintenance Shrubs for Your Yard
Life gets busy. Between the kids summer sports and program involvement and your busy, hectic work schedule, planting and maintaining shrubs and bushes in your yard is the last thing on your to-do list. Have no fear! There are several low maintenance shrubs and bushes that will add a pop of color to your yard and require little upkeep through the summer months. We have put together a list below and a short description of each. This will help you understand what your options are and give you a feel for the color and foliage they will provide in your yard.
Spirea– You can’t go wrong with these blossoming, beautiful bushes. We had mentioned them in a previous article, but they will not let you down. They bloom and become hardier year after year. Group them in odd numbers to add some spark to your yard. There are many varieties and colors, so the options are endless. These plants flourish best in full sunlight.
Knock Out Roses– The blooms of these shrubs average from two to four feet and bloom well into the fall. These dainty, beautiful shrubs require no pruning to re-bloom and are disease and pest resistant.
Hydrangea– There are many varieties of this shrub. The main flower clusters are produced from the tips of shoots formed from the previous season. The white blooms will fade to a deep pink as they soak up the summer sun.
Dogwood– This wonderful variegated selection offers a backdrop for your colorful annual blooms. This plant provides attraction all year long as during the winter, its red stems add color to your snowy yard. These plants grow best in sunlight to partial shade and require consistently moist soil.
Burning Bush– The red and burgundy leaves on this shrub add color to your yard in the fall and early winter months when everything is brown and/or white. There are dwarf varieties available as well, depending on how tall you would like it to be.
Forsythia– These fast-growing shrubs are a ball of sunshine in your yard. These plants will grow one to two feet per year and spread throughout your yard. These shrubs grow best in full sunlight or partial shade and provide a splash of color in the fall months.
